LAHORE, Oct 07 (APP):The Walled City of Lahore Authority (WCLA) has begun conservation and shifting of Red Sandstone from Hujras at Jahangir’s Tomb.
In 2023, the Shah Dara Complex was officially handed over to the Walled City of Lahore
Authority (WCLA).
During initial assessments, the Hujras (chambers) surrounding, the tomb were found filled with red sandstone and other historic materials, originally removed from prominent Mughal-era monuments such as the Shahdara Complex, Shalimar Gardens, and the Lahore Fort.
These materials have now been carefully documented and properly relocated in accordance with heritage conservation standards.
This initiative is part of WCLA’s broader Conservation Scheme for the Shahdara Complex, which focuses on the restoration of the deteriorating Hujras at Jahangir’s Tomb. The project includes systematic conservation, structural stabilization, and the preservation of historic elements, alongside improvements to visitor facilities across the site.
Speaking about the effort, Najam U Saqib , Director General of WCLA, stated: “The identification and proper relocation of red sandstone is crucial to the preservation of our heritage. By safely securing these materials, we aim to ensure they are documented and potentially reused or displayed in ways that reflect their historic value. The conservation of the Hujras at Jahangir’s Tomb is a key component of our broader vision to safeguard and revive the Shahdara Complex.”
