LAHORE, Jun 26 (APP): In order to take forward ‘Eco-Friendly Punjab’ vision of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, waste would be used for energy and other useful purposes under ‘Suthra Punjab’ programme.
The decision was taken in a meeting held at the Civil Secretariat under the chairmanship of Punjab Local Government Minister Zeeshan Rafiq. Lahore Waste Management Company (LWMC) CEO Babar Sahib Din briefed on the project. Additional Secretary Local Government Ahmer Kaifi also attended the meeting.
Local Government Minister Zeeshan Rafiq said that in the next phase of the ‘Suthra Punjab’ programme, biogas production from waste was being started. “Valorization of Lakhodair landfill site in valuable carbon credits will be ensured”, he pledged. He further said that waste generated every day would be segregated and made reusable.
The Local Government Minister said that a 50 MW plant was also being considered with the help of provincial energy department. He urged that a public-private partnership model should be adopted for waste recycling.
“A pilot project”, he went on, “to generate energy from waste will also be started in Lahore”.
During the meeting, it was also decided to organize a road show to generate income from waste.
The provincial minister directed the LWMC to study international models of waste to energy and said that thousands of tons of waste were collected in Punjab every day. “Billions of dollars are being earned from waste recycling around the world. All necessary steps will be taken to transform Clean Punjab into a truly eco-friendly project”, he observed.
