LAHORE, Jul 10 (APP):Following intense rainfall in Lahore within a short span of time, the Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) initiated a full-scale emergency drainage operation across the city on Thursday to prevent urban flooding and ensure public safety.
According to WASA sources, all scheduled leaves of WASA personnel were immediately cancelled, and staff were urgently deployed in the field to expedite drainage efforts. The operation is being carried out on the direct orders of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif.
Punjab Minister for Housing Bilal Yasin and Secretary Housing Noor-ul-Amin Mengal have been actively supervising operations on the ground. Secretary Mengal issued immediate directives for the deployment of additional machinery to affected areas and ordered that drainage support be extended even to zones falling under the Municipal Corporation’s jurisdiction.
“All field officers have been mobilized, and our teams are monitoring operations round-the-clock,” said Secretary Mengal. “We expect most major locations across the city to be cleared within the next few hours.”
Special attention is being given to low-lying and densely populated areas, which are being prioritized for rapid water clearance. Construction sites across the city have also been ordered to implement safety measures. Warning signs and barriers are being placed around open excavations to prevent accidents during the ongoing weather emergency.
Secretary Housing emphasized that the drainage operation is continuing uninterrupted across Punjab and that real-time updates are being sent to the Chief Minister, who is personally monitoring every stage of the operation.
With more rainfall predicted in the coming days, the Punjab government has reiterated its commitment to protecting citizens and ensuring swift and effective response through coordinated efforts by all relevant departments.
