HYDERABAD, Nov 03 (APP):On the occasion of World Stroke Day, the Department of Neurology at Liaquat University Hospital, Hyderabad/Jamshoro, organized an awareness walk.
Under the leadership of Medical Superintendent Dr Ali Akbar Dahri and Associate Professor of Neurology at LUMS University, Jamshoro, Dr Abdul Hafeez Laghari, the walk aimed to provide awareness to the public and medical staff about the timely treatment and prevention of stroke.
Addressing the participants, Dr Ali Akbar Dahri and Dr Abdul Hafeez Laghari said that stroke can occur at any age, and this is why the mortality rate due to stroke is increasing globally.
However, with advancements in medical science, there have been significant improvements in the treatment of stroke.
Despite this, a large portion of the population is deprived of timely, effective, and affordable treatment, resulting in approximately 153 people out of 100,000 suffering from stroke every year in Pakistan, and millions being forced to live with permanent disabilities.
They highlighted the symptoms of stroke, including numbness in any part of the body, loss of speech, difficulty in understanding speech, difficulty in eating and drinking, difficulty in walking, and blurred vision. They emphasized that physiotherapy facilities are available 24/7 at Liaquat University Hospital, Hyderabad, which can reduce the risk of permanent disability in stroke patients and highlight the importance of timely treatment.
They also stated that stroke is a disease that can paralyze any part of the body and can be life-threatening in some cases, with 63% of stroke patients suffering from various medical complications. To prevent stroke, it is essential to control blood pressure, sugar, and cholesterol levels, and avoid consuming fatty foods and alcohol.
By adopting preventive measures, not only can the annual mortality rate due to stroke be reduced, but a large number of patients can also be saved from various complications and lifelong disabilities.
They demanded that stroke care units be established in all major hospitals, which can reduce the rate of disability due to stroke by approximately 30%.
The walk was attended by Dr Mujeeb Rehman Kaloor, AMS General-II, Neuro Physician Dr Mehosh, Coordinator Stroke Team LUH Hyderabad, Dr Husnain Morani, and Admin Registrar Dr Mahmood, along with doctors, nurses, and other staff from the Department of Neurology.
