Violence against women intolerable: PWPA chairperson

LAHORE, Aug 03 (APP):Punjab Women Protection Authority (PWPA) Chairperson Hina Pervaiz Butt has announced that the Punjab government will soon be formulating rules under the Women’s Protection Act.
Emphasizing the urgent need to enhance the police investigation and prosecution systems, she expressed concern over the lack of convictions for perpetrators of violence against women in courts. Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz is committed to seeing women become strong, empowered, and self-reliant, and is taking practical steps to achieve this, she said,
During a meeting with representatives from various non-governmental organizations here on Saturday, the chairperson highlighted the importance of virtual police stations in providing justice to affected women on a priority basis. She stated that violence against women was absolutely intolerable. “We must collectively change the mindset of society.” The increasing incidents of violence against women were alarming, with the case of Sania Zahra in Multan being a notable example. Such incidents are reported daily, underscoring the need for an improved police and prosecution system.
Hina Pervaiz expressed deep concern over the lack of convictions for offenders in courts, deeming it one of the most troubling issues. She reiterated that the Punjab government was in the process of drafting rules for the Women’s Protection Act and stressed Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz’s stance, as articulated in her speeches, that women are her “red line.”
The Punjab government is introducing various projects aimed at empowering women, recognizing that society can not progress without women’s empowerment, she said and called for encouraging reports of harassment at workplaces. She urged the heads of all private and public institutions to fulfil their responsibilities in this regard.
