LAHORE, Nov 30 (APP): For the first time, the Punjab government is implementing significant reforms to address traffic issues in the region. These reforms, which involve 20 major changes to the 60-year-old Traffic Act, are part of an effort to modernize and regulate traffic management more effectively.
Under the new amendments, if any vehicle is repeatedly challaned (fined), the vehicle will be auctioned off. In addition, government vehicles are no longer exempt from the law, and any government vehicle found violating traffic laws will face heavy fines.
A 30-day deadline has been set to eliminate one-way violations across the province, with plans to redesign U-turns to make roads safer and more organized. Additionally, it has been decided to provide immediate diyat (compensation) to the families of individuals killed in accidents.
In a significant move, marriage halls will now be required to provide proper parking facilities; those that fail to comply will not be permitted to operate. Furthermore, a strict crackdown will be launched to prevent underage children from driving. If an underage child is caught driving, the vehicle owner can face imprisonment for up to six months.
Another key reform includes a ban on riding on the roofs of buses, which will be strictly enforced. Lastly, a complete ban on rickshaws will be imposed on five model roads in Lahore to improve traffic flow and ensure the safety of citizens.
These reforms are part of the government’s broader efforts to create a safer, more efficient traffic environment in Punjab, and will be closely monitored to ensure successful implementation.
