Urgent measures needed to protect, promote forests: Caretaker CM GB

ASTORE, Dec 22 (APP):Caretaker Chief Minister of Gilgit-Baltistan, Justice (R) Yaar Muhammad said that the negative impacts of climate change are being felt across the world, and Gilgit-Baltistan is also being affected on a large scale. To mitigate these adverse effects, there is an urgent need to take immediate measures for the protection and promotion of forests.
While speaking on the occasion of a departmental briefing given by the Forests and Wildlife Department, he emphasized that in order to transfer a safe, green, and prosperous Gilgit-Baltistan to future generations, decisions must be made beyond personal interests and affiliations.
The Chief Minister directed that strict actions be taken to discourage illegal logging and transportation of timber. He also stressed the promotion of conservation committees for the protection of natural herbs and medicinal plants, and directed that necessary steps be taken for the approval of Forest Rules.
Justice (R) Yaar Muhammad further directed the Forest Department to formulate a comprehensive and transparent mechanism for the disposal of confiscated illegal timber, ensuring that timber mafias involved in illegal logging are discouraged while safeguarding the national exchequer from financial loss. He also emphasized the need to introduce a modern monitoring system by utilizing advanced technology for the protection and promotion of forests.
Highlighting the importance of the “Upscale Green Pakistan” initiative, the Caretaker Chief Minister said that it is a significant national project aimed at promoting afforestation, and special focus should be given to extending its benefits to Gilgit-Baltistan in order to enhance tree plantation across the region.
The Caretaker Chief Minister stated that wildlife is a priceless gift of nature and plays a vital role in enhancing the natural beauty of the region. He directed that, in view of the success of existing conservation committees, more such committees should be established and further strengthened to ensure effective protection of wildlife.
He also stressed the need for special attention towards environmental protection and directed that awareness campaigns be launched among the public to make Gilgit-Baltistan free from plastic and other hazardous materials
