PESHAWAR, Jun 15 (APP):Employees of the University of Peshawar (UoP) staged a protest demonstration outside the Peshawar Press Club on Monday against non-payment of salaries and pensions for the past two months.
The protest was organized under the banner of the University of Peshawar Employees Association and was led by President Abdul Malik, Class-IV Union President Imdad Khan, and Sanitation Staff President Lazar Masih.
Speaking on the occasion, the protesters said they had not received salaries for May, while pensioners were also deprived of their dues.
They added that 50 percent of the April pension was still pending, causing severe financial hardship to employees and pension holders.
The employees said delayed payment of salaries had become a routine matter, adding that many families were facing extreme difficulties, including inability to meet household expenses and children being withdrawn from schools due to financial constraints.
They further said that the university had been facing long-standing financial and administrative issues, while salaries and pensions were not being paid on time for several years.
The protesters criticized the administration for its failure to resolve the issue and said the provincial government was also not taking serious steps to address the financial crisis in the institution.
They said a summary sent by the Higher Education Department for fund release was still pending, leaving little hope for timely payment.
The employees also highlighted that university staff in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa were among the lowest paid government employees in the country and were deprived of several allowances, including DRA 2022 and DRA 2025.
They said some allowances previously granted before the 18th Constitutional Amendment had also been withdrawn.
They warned that if salaries and pensions for May and June were not released immediately, employees would be forced to launch a pen-down and work stoppage strike.
The protesters further cautioned that in case of further delay, they would block University Road, Peshawar, for all types of traffic, and the responsibility would lie with the provincial government.
