UNEP’s committee, IKMUN calls for coordinated regional, global action to combat plastic pollution

PESHAWAR, Dec 03 (APP): The International Khyber Model United Nations (IKMUN), a committee of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) committee has achieved a significant milestone in addressing plastic pollution.
Under the leadership of Chairperson IKMUN, Dr. Nouman Khan, a young medical professional from Peshawar, the landmark resolution was passed with a 2/3rd majority, emphasizing on tackling of plastic pollution and its far-reaching impact on the environment.
According to a press release issued here on Wednesday, the IKMUN UNEP committee’s efforts aim to inspire young leaders to take action against plastic pollution and promote sustainable development in the region.
The resolution, sponsored by delegates from Pakistan, Brazil, Nigeria, Sri Lanka, the Philippines, and the Maldives, highlights the urgent need for coordinated regional and global action to combat plastic pollution, which poses significant threats to marine ecosystems, fisheries, tourism, and public health in these countries.
The resolution proposes a range of solutions, including strengthening waste management systems, reducing single-use plastics, promoting extended producer responsibility, and investing in waste-to-energy technologies.
It also emphasizes the importance of regional cooperation, community empowerment, and public awareness campaigns to tackle plastic pollution.
This achievement demonstrates the power of collaborative action and the commitment of young leaders to address pressing global challenges.
The resolution was passed with the support of delegates from leading schools and colleges in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, who participated in the conference and debated the topic “Developing National Strategies to Tackle Plastic Pollution and its Impact”.
“We hope that this initiative will pave the way for a plastic-free future and inspire others to take action against plastic pollution,” comments Dr. Nouman Khan.
