MUZAFFARABAD, Dec 06 (APP):The University of Azad Jammu & Kashmir (UAJK) held its 21st Convocation at the King Abdullah Campus (KAC) on Saturday, in a dignified and colorful ceremony attended by thousands of graduating students, their families, and distinguished guests.
Addressing the graduating class, comprising thousands of students from undergraduate, graduate and doctoral programmes, including 51 gold medalists and 28 PhD scholars, the Acting President of Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Chancellor of UAJK congratulated them and their families on their academic achievements.
He urged the students to uphold the values of integrity, discipline, and innovation as they embark on their professional and academic journeys, emphasizing that the future of the region and the nation rests in the hands of enlightened and responsible youth.
The Chancellor praised UAJK’s steady progress in academic development, research, infrastructure enhancement, and student support services. He highlighted the introduction of modern and emerging disciplines, including Artificial Intelligence, Cyber Security, Biotechnology, Nursing, and Pharmacy, as a reflection of the university’s commitment to equipping students with skills relevant to a rapidly changing and highly competitive global environment.
While acknowledging the financial challenges faced by the university, the Chancellor assured that the Government of Azad Jammu and Kashmir would take concrete steps to strengthen its premier higher education institution. He also urged the faculty to continue upholding high teaching standards, promote academic integrity, and inspire students to become responsible leaders and professionals.
Referring to the situation across the Line of Control, the Chancellor expressed solidarity with Kashmiri youth living under occupation, stating that their voices are being suppressed through force and intimidation. He said that Indian military and paramilitary forces are targeting all segments of society, including academicians, journalists, and human rights defenders, particularly under the Modi-led regime. He called upon the youth of Azad Jammu and Kashmir to continue raising awareness for their brethren through all peaceful and available platforms, including social media.
Vice-Chancellor Nasir Jamal Khattak welcomed the distinguished guests and graduating students, describing the convocation as a day of pride, achievement, and renewed hope. He highlighted that UAJK remains the largest and oldest higher education institution in the region, providing access to quality education for students from far-flung and underserved areas, including Neelum, Bhimber, Kotli, Haveli, Leepa, Rawalakot, and other parts of Azad Jammu and Kashmir.
The Vice-Chancellor also shed light on the university’s financial deficit of Rs 1.3 billion, attributing it to inflation, rising operational expenses, and pension liabilities. He outlined a series of strategic measures undertaken to address this challenge, including the establishment of an Endowment Fund, strengthening of the Pension Fund, rationalization of departments with low enrollment, and solarization of administrative and academic facilities to reduce energy costs. He appealed to the AJK government to extend its support to safeguard and sustain the future of higher education in the state.
Highlighting student welfare initiatives, he noted the expansion of scholarship programs, free accommodation for differently-abled students, improved hostel and transport services, access to mental health support, and the promotion of entrepreneurship and innovation among students. He emphasized that diversity, inclusion, and equal opportunity remain at the core of the university’s mission.
During the ceremony, degrees were conferred upon students from undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral programs. A total of 51 gold medals were awarded to outstanding students, while 28 PhD scholars were recognized for their exceptional academic and research contributions.
Earlier, the convocation commenced with a solemn academic procession, led by the Chancellor and Vice-Chancellor, along with deans, faculty members, and senior officials clad in traditional academic regalia, symbolizing the university’s deep-rooted commitment to scholarly traditions and excellence.
Graduating students expressed pride in being part of UAJK and gratitude towards their parents, teachers, and the institution for their support and guidance. Many shared their determination to apply the knowledge and skills gained at the university in serving their communities and contributing to national development.
The ceremony was attended by government officials, legislators, civil and military leaders, academicians, media representatives, and parents.
