UAF marks World Statistics Day

FAISALABAD, Oct 20 (APP):University of Agriculture Faisalabad (UAF) on Monday has marked the World Statistics Day by organizing a seminar for driving change with quality statistics and data for everyone for effective policymaking, economic planning and societal development.
Department of Mathematics and statistics at Center for Advanced Studies (CAS) UAF sponsored the event in which resource persons and experts addressed the participants.
Speaking on the occasion, UAF Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Zulfiqar Ali said that statistics play vital role in understanding and interpreting the realities of the world as it is not merely about numbers but it is a powerful tool for understanding change.
He said that it provides a scientific basis for collecting, analyzing and interpreting data, enabling informed decision-making in various fields.
He said that the subject also helps in agriculture by estimating crop yielding and evaluating soil fertility.
He said that it also supports policymakers and researchers in developing strategies to increase productivity and ensure food security.
He added statistics offers reliable insights derived from data, reducing uncertainty.
He said that whether it is government planning, business forecasting or academic research, statistical tools enable comparison, evaluation and projection of food trends.
Dean Faculty of Science Prof Dr Amer Jamil said that data is the driving force of the modern era. He stressed the need for innovation in data collection and analysis to meet global challenges.
He appreciated the collaboration between UAF and the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics for promoting data quality and professional capacity building.
He said that equally important is building data literacy within communities, making statistics accessible and understandable to all.
Chairman Department of Mathematics and Statistics Dr Zafar Iqbal said that quality statistics are essential for shaping national policies and measuring progress toward Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
He urged young researchers to develop analytical skills and contribute to national databases for evidence-based planning.
Pakistan Bureau of Statistics Director Dr Muhammad Irfan highlighted that the organization is committed to enhancing data reliability and accessibility nationwide.
He said accurate data supports government planning and international comparisons, fostering transparency, accountability and sustainable progress.
Dr Muhammad Kashif said that the day highlights the importance of reliable, timely and high-quality data in shaping public policy, advancing sustainable development and improving lives.
