PESHAWAR, Oct 08 (APP):Governor Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Faisal Karim Kundi has said that the Torkham border serves as a vital trade corridor between Pakistan and Afghanistan, but traders continue to face several challenges that hinder smooth commercial activities.
He emphasized that resolving these issues and improving trade facilitation at the border would not only boost bilateral commerce but also contribute to regional economic growth.
The Governor expressed these views while speaking to trainee officers of the 31st Specialized Training Program of the Pakistan Institute of Trade and Development (PITAD) who visited the Governor’s House, Peshawar, on Wednesday.
Welcoming the officers, Governor Kundi briefed them on the province’s economic potential, natural resources, tourism prospects, and opportunities in oil, gas, and mineral sectors.
He said Khyber Pakhtunkhwa offers immense prospects for trade and investment, adding that peace and stability are essential for economic growth.
The Governor stressed the need to create a conducive business environment and to make border trade routes more effective.
“If all seven border passes of the province are opened, it could revolutionize regional trade,” he remarked, adding that KP can serve as a gateway for trade with Central Asian states.
He said efforts are being made to facilitate the corporate sector and industrialists to promote business and investment in the province.
The Governor said that, unfortunately, agriculture and other vital sectors have not received due attention over the years.
Expressing optimism, he said that despite multiple challenges, the province is determined to overcome its economic hurdles.
Responding to a question, Governor Kundi said that the Governor’s House is actively recognizing and encouraging individuals serving in various fields. He emphasized the need to operationalize Pak-Afghan border markets to boost revenue and curb smuggling.
