MULTAN, Oct 28 (APP):The changing weather has once again brought smog-related challenges to Multan and other parts of South Punjab, raising health concerns among citizens, workers, students, and daily commuters.
On Tuesday, sunlight remained dim throughout the day in Multan, as a thick layer of haze enveloped the city. Hospitals have reported a noticeable surge of patients suffering from flu, cough, asthma, and other respiratory ailments over the past few days.
Meteorological Department, Deputy Director Dr Arshad, told APP, rainfall could help reduce smog levels, but there were no chances of rain in Multan and adjoining areas for the next ten days. He warned that burning of crop residue in areas along the eastern border, combined with vehicular emissions and dust, could intensify smog in the coming days, potentially worsening the Air Quality Index (AQI).
“The current haze is unhealthy and harmful to human health. Without rain, the situation may deteriorate further,” Dr. Arshad added.
Parents of school-going children have expressed deep concern over rising pollution levels. Health experts have advised citizens, especially those suffering from asthma or chronic respiratory diseases, to avoid unnecessary outdoor activities.
Family physician Dr. Abdul Sami advised parents to ensure precautionary measures for their children.
“Most of my patients these days complain of flu, cough, and breathing difficulties.
Smog, dust, and toxic vehicle smoke are the main triggers,” he explained.
He advised citizens to cover their faces while going out, stay hydrated, avoid street food, and refrain from consuming uncovered items exposed to pollution.
Environmentalists have also urged authorities to strictly monitor crop residue burning and industrial emissions, emphasizing that urgent measures were needed to protect public health and reduce air pollution in South Punjab.
