SUKKUR, Sep 14 (APP): Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah on Sunday visited the Guddu Barrage to assess the flood situation and was briefed by Irrigation Minister Jam Khan Shoro and Irrigation Secretary Zarif Khehro. The barrage is currently handling a high-level flood of 627,908 cusecs of water, with the designed capacity being 1.1 million cusecs.
The Chief Minister was informed that the Tori Bund and K.K Bund are vulnerable areas, and flood-fighting work is ongoing at the 18th mile of the K.K Bund. The provincial government has taken measures to safely manage floodwaters in districts Kashmore and Shikarpur. According to the NDMA advisories, the Guddu Barrage region is prepared for the safe passage of super floods.
The Chief Minister was briefed on the deployment of machinery, lanchas, and flood-fighting equipment along the embankments. Emergency work is in progress at vulnerable points, and the Sindh Barrages Improvement Project (SBIP) is ongoing with the support of the World Bank. Under the SBIP, the gates and gearing systems of the main barrage and canals are being replaced, and river training works are also being restored.
The Chief Minister directed that surveillance at weak and sensitive points be further strengthened and that the flood-fighting staff remain on duty 24/7. He also instructed the district administration to expedite relief efforts in coordination with the public and to report any emergency situation immediately to the Provincial Control Room.
The Chief Minister assured the public that their safety would be ensured at all costs and that the government would not leave them alone in this difficult time. He expressed confidence that the people of Sindh, known for their resilience, would overcome the flood challenge together. He praised the farmers and laborers for their steadfastness in the face of adversity and reiterated the government’s commitment to standing with the people during this crisis.
