Secretary orders PAFDA labs to ensure rapid detection of adulterated food
LAHORE, Sep 02 (APP):Secretary Food Safety and Consumer Protection Dr Kiran Khursheed on Wednesday directed the Punjab Agriculture, Food and Drug Authority (PAFDA) to expedite testing of food samples and strengthen its laboratory capacity to ensure timely detection of adulterated food items.
She was chairing a meeting of PAFDA, attended by Director General Punjab Food Authority (PFA) Raja Mansoor, Additional Director General Licensing Rao Parvez Akhtar, Member Research and Training Dr Irfan Ashiq, Member PAFDA Muhammad Nasir and other senior officers.
Dr Kiran Khursheed said modern testing laboratories of PAFDA would enable the authorities to promptly identify adulterated food items and further tighten the noose around the adulteration mafia. She directed that food sample testing reports be completed within the shortest possible time so that results could be obtained promptly and necessary legal action taken against those responsible.
The secretary also ordered immediate completion of the procurement process for modern equipment for PAFDA laboratories. She was informed that PAFDA was currently conducting quality testing of 286 different food items, while the scope of testing was being further expanded. The food testing capacity of PAFDA laboratories in Multan and Faisalabad was also being enhanced to ensure timely detection of adulteration and facilitate prompt legal action against violators.
Dr Kiran Khursheed said provision of safe and adulteration-free food to the people of Punjab was the government’s foremost priority.
