Sargodha University marks World Diabetes Day with seminar, awareness walk

SARGODHA, Nov 20 (APP):The Department of Sociology and Criminology, University of Sargodha, organised a seminar and an awareness walk to observe World Diabetes Day.
The event aimed to promote early screening, preventive healthcare, and public awareness regarding diabetes which is one of the rapidly growing health concerns in Pakistan.
The seminar brought together experts from the medical and social sectors including Dr. Taqi, Medical Specialist at DHQ Hospital Sargodha, Ms. Nadia Misal from the Medical Social Services Unit, Social Welfare and Bait-ul-Maal Department, and Dr. Shahid, Associate Professor at the Institute of Food Sciences.
Dr. Taqi delivered a detailed talk on diabetes symptoms, risk factors and treatment options, stressing the importance of regular monitoring and adherence to prescribed medication to avoid long-term complications.
Ms. Nadia Misal highlighted the socio-economic challenges faced by diabetic patients. She underscored the need for community support, especially for low-income families struggling with long-term treatment requirements.
Dr. Shahid emphasized the significance of balanced nutrition and physical activity in reducing the risk of diabetes. He encouraged students to adopt healthier daily routines and make informed dietary choices.
Addressing the participants, Dr. Shehzad Khawer Mushtaq, Incharge Department of Sociology & Criminology, appreciated the initiative and stressed the significance of health literacy in building a disease-aware society. He encouraged students to act as social ambassadors, spreading awareness within their families and communities to reduce the national health burden associated with diabetes.
The event supervisor Dr. Zarqa Azhar emphasized that timely diagnosis and lifestyle modification are essential tools in preventing diabetes-related complications. She also highlighted the responsibility of educational institutions in promoting public health advocacy.
The event concluded with an awareness walk in which faculty members, students and social workers participated. Carrying banners and sharing key messages, the participants promoted diabetes awareness and encouraged the adoption of healthy living across the campus.
