RAWALPINDI, Feb 12 (APP): The Rawalpindi Police arrested 312 professional beggars in the past 28 days as part of an ongoing citywide crackdown, a police spokesman said on Thursday.
The detainees included 140 men, 155 women and 17 transgender individuals, he added.
Special squads, formed under the instructions of City Police Officer (CPO) Syed Khalid Mahmood Hamdani, are continuing the action against professional begging, the spokesman said.
He said strict monitoring was in place on busy streets and highways to prevent beggars from obstructing traffic or causing inconvenience to citizens.
He noted that many professional beggars were also involved in theft, drug dealing and other criminal activities.
The spokesman said the crackdown would continue across Rawalpindi in line with the Punjab Chief Minister’s vision to ensure safer and more orderly streets.
