Qatar Hospital to be transformed into model healthcare facility: Azra Pechohu

KARACHI, Oct 29 (APP):Sindh Health Minister Dr Azra Fazal Pechohu on Wednesday emphasised that Qatar Hospital will be transformed into a model healthcare facility where trained doctors and nurses to be made available for providing medical facilities to millions of people of Orangi Town and other adjoining areas.
Chairing a high level meeting to review and improve emergency services in the hospitals of the province, Dr Pechohu said saving the life of a patient was the foremost responsibility of the state as well as healthcare professionals, therefore, a highly skilled workforce, state of the art machinery and an international standard emergency system must be ensured without any delay.
Health Minister directed redesigning of the ICU and emergency services with relocation of radiology and laboratory services closer to the emergency, ensuring immediate provision of CT and other essential services.
The Medical Superintendent of the Qatar Hospital Dr Rashid, representatives from Aga Khan University, CEO Sindh Healthcare Commission Dr Ahsan Qavi and other senior officials also briefed the meeting about existing health facilities and suggested further addition for the well being of the people of the province.
Dr. Rashid informed the meeting that Qatar Hospital serves a population of over 6.5 million, while more than 334000 patients received emergency care in last nine months.  He said that the upgrading the emergency and ICU services in line with modern needs was the need of the hour.
The Minister also expressed interest in formalizing collaboration with Aga Khan University through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and directed that details required HR, bed capacity, design needs, cost estimates be shared at the earliest. She also instructed for construction of a direct access corridor to radiology for CT and MRI procedures.
The Aga Khan University delegation  briefed the minister and urged that Basic Life Support (BSL) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) training programs are mandatory for hospital licensing.
The Minister also approved the technical and training collaboration with Aga Khan University, stressing that newly recruited Grade 17 doctors and nurses should immediately undergo BLS training, while grade 18 and senior staff may be trained in phases.
Dr. Pechohu reiterated that all these initiatives aim to strengthen  emergency healthcare, ensure timely life saving treatment  and upgrade  the health system of Sindh to global standard.
