SARGODHA, Nov 05 (APP):The Livestock and Dairy Development Department Punjab has launched a major genetic improvement programme aimed at enhancing the productivity of local (desi) non-descriptive cows — a move hailed as one of the most promising initiatives in the province’s livestock sector.
Additional Director Livestock Dr Tanveer Ashraf Kalyar told APP on Wednesday that the Punjab government had allocated Rs. 1 billion for the project, which would provide over one million doses of high-quality cattle semen at highly subsidised rates.
“Brahman semen doses are being offered at Rs. 500 and Friesian semen doses at just Rs. 150,” he said, adding that the programme would significantly improve milk and meat yields of indigenous breeds across Punjab.
Dr Kalyar explained that most cows in rural Punjab belong to non-descriptive local breeds with low milk production potential. “The goal is to improve the genetic makeup of these cows so they can produce more milk, gain weight faster, and ultimately uplift the economic condition of livestock farmers,” he noted.
He said that eligible animals must meet specific criteria to qualify for insemination — producing at least 3 to 5 litres of milk daily, being reproductively active, free from diseases, and having calved at least once.
Dr Kalyar added that the use of high-quality semen would not only enhance productivity but also help farmers breed stronger, healthier, and more efficient animals. “By adopting this scientific approach, we aim to transform our traditional livestock sector into a modern, profitable, and sustainable enterprise,” he added.
He further said the project also includes a strong research component, with genetic improvement work being carried out at provincial research institutions to produce superior bulls, enhance field performance, and build the technical capacity of farmers and veterinary staff.
Dr Kalyar urged livestock owners to visit their nearest veterinary hospitals or certified insemination technicians to benefit from the subsidized semen doses. “The Livestock Department Punjab stands shoulder to shoulder with farmers to ensure that every rural household benefits from improved animal productivity,” he affirmed, adding that the initiative would help meet growing milk and meat demand while strengthening the rural economy.
