LAHORE, Jun 30 (APP):The Punjab Environmental Protection Department has officially launched the “Plastic-Free Punjab Pledge” campaign, inviting all businesses and commercial entities across the province to participate in the drive towards a cleaner, greener Punjab.
As part of the campaign, a ban has been imposed on plastic bags thinner than 75 microns or smaller than 12×16 inches. Businesses and citizens are being encouraged to take a pledge to avoid the use of banned plastic bags and adopt eco-friendly alternatives.
Secretary Environment Punjab, Silwat Saeed, along with Director General Environment Punjab Imran Hamid Sheikh and other senior officials, visited various business centers to raise awareness and promote participation in the campaign.
Speaking on the occasion, Secretary Silwat Saeed stated, “The Plastic-Free Punjab Pledge is a practical step toward environmental protection and a cleaner atmosphere. The Punjab government is fully committed to eliminating plastic pollution through serious and sustained efforts.”
She added that eco-conscious business practices will not only benefit the environment but also guarantee a clean and green future for Punjab.
The campaign, which began on June 5, 2024, has gained momentum after the enactment of specific legislation regulating plastic usage.
According to Punjab EPA spokesperson Sajid Bashir, enforcement has significantly increased in recent weeks:
Over 263,163 kilograms of plastic bags have been seized while more than 9,000 notices have been issued to violators.
“Single-use plastic is wreaking havoc on the environment and causing serious health concerns,” warned Secretary Silwat Saeed.
