Punjab Govt issues SOPs to facilitate prisoners’ meeting with relatives

RAWALPINDI, Jul 24 (APP):The Punjab Government has decided to provide best facilities to inmates of jails across the province including Adiala Jail for meeting with their family members and friends.
According to the spokesperson of Punjab Home Department, a series of jail reforms were underway on the orders of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz and issuance of standard operating procedures (SOPs) for respectful and dignified meetings of the prisoners with their loved ones was one of them,
Under the reforms, he said, a clean and organized parking space would be provided to the visitors where they would be able to park their vehicles or motorcycles, and free transport facility would be provided in districts where parking was located far from the jail premises.
Similarly, the spokesman said, seating arrangements would be made for the visitors according to the weather conditions, with separate benches and chairs available for men, women and the elderly. Cleanliness arrangements with the washroom facility would also be ensured at the sitting area, with a sanitary worker permanently posted there.
A sound system, LED TV and CCTV cameras would be installed in the waiting room, he added.
The spokesman said the elderly men and women would be given priority in visits, while children would be provided with free food and drinks.
The jail staff, he said, would have to treat every visitor with courtesy, without violating anyone’s honour or dignity.
The goods brought by the visitors for their imprisoned relatives or friends would be delivered as soon as possible, and for that separate baskets affixed with the slips carrying the names of inmates concerned would be used, the spokesman said.
Any complaints of visitors would be immediately redressed, he added.
The spokesman said the superintendents and deputy superintendents of all prisons would be responsible to implement the SOPs.
The monitoring teams of the Home Department would conduct inspections and action would be taken against the superintendents and deputy superintendents who do not implement the SOPs, he added.
