LAHORE, Jun 05 (APP):On the special directive of Punjab Chief Minister, the Punjab Home Department has issued a formal notification granting a 90-day special remission in sentences for prisoners across the province’s jails on occasion of Eidul Azha.
According to a spokesperson for the Home Department, the remission has been granted in accordance with Rule 216 of the Pakistan Prison Rules, 1978. The notification was issued by Secretary of Interior Noor-ul-Amin Mengal, following legal procedures and in the spirit of humanitarian relief ahead of Eid.
A total of 450 prisoners will benefit from this initiative, while 270 inmates will be released and are expected to celebrate Eid with their families.
The spokesperson further clarified that the remission also covers inmates who were released due to payment of fines by philanthropists or on the basis of good conduct during incarceration. However, the facility strictly excludes prisoners convicted of serious crimes.
According to the notification, inmates convicted of terrorism, sectarian violence, espionage, rebellion, and anti-state activities will not be eligible for remission. Additionally, those found guilty of murder, rape, drug trafficking, armed robbery, kidnapping for ransom, financial fraud, and causing loss to the national treasury have also been excluded.
The Home Department emphasized that prisoners who violated jail rules within the past year will likewise not be eligible for this special relief.
