LAHORE, Jan 06 (APP):The Punjab Bar Council (PbBC) on Tuesday restored the licence of YouTuber Rajab Butt’s counsel, Mian Ali Ashfaq.
Mian Ali Ashfaq appeared before the PbBC Vice Chairman and contended that his licence had been suspended without issuance of any notice or an opportunity to present his stance, terming the action contrary to law. He denied the allegations against him and maintained that he had not acted against the interests of the legal fraternity.
At this, the vice chairman restored the licence of Mian Ali Ashfaq and referred the matter to the council’s disciplinary committee for further proceedings, directing the office to inform the Lahore High Court (LHC) about the decision.
Earlier, the LHC, while hearing Mian Ali Ashfaq’s petition seeking restoration of his licence, had referred the matter to the Punjab Bar Council and ordered to decide the matter by 2 pm.
Justice Malik Muhammad Owais Khalid directed the PbBC Vice Chairman to hear the petitioner and decide the case in accordance with the law, after which the court would pass its order.
Following the restoration of the lawyer’s licence by the PbBC, the LHC disposed of the petition.
It may be recalled that the PbBC had suspended the licence of Mian Ali Ashfaq following an incident involving a scuffle among lawyers in Karachi, allegedly linked to YouTuber Rajab Butt and his counsel.
According to the PbBC, Mian Ali Ashfaq appeared at the bar along with his client during a lawyers’ strike and entered the premises accompanied by a private security guard, which was stated to be in violation of the lawyers’ code of conduct. The council maintained that the incident led to unrest and a scuffle among lawyers.
