KARACHI, Nov 07 (APP): The Asian Academy of Sciences (AAS), headquartered in Hong Kong, has formally announced the election of renowned Pakistani scientist Prof. Atta-ur-Rahman as an honorary academician of the academy.
According to a spokesperson for the International Center for Chemical and Biological Sciences (ICCBS), University of Karachi, the announcement was made through an official communication from Prof. Dr. Elchin Khalilov, President of the AAS, recognizing Prof. Rahman’s monumental contributions to global science and education.
The AAS described Prof. Rahman’s induction as a momentous occasion for the scientific community across Asia.
The academy highlighted his lifelong dedication to advancing scientific knowledge and his leadership in fostering regional and global cooperation in science and technology.
The official inauguration ceremony will be held during the AAS General Assembly on November 22, 2025, followed by a ceremonial session in China in March 2026, where Prof. Rahman will receive the Golden Breast Insignia, crafted from 999-carat gold — the highest distinction conferred by the AAS upon world-renowned scientists.

The Royal Society (London), the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the Korean Academy of Science and Technology. He praised Prof. Rahman’s leadership, acknowledging his pivotal role at international scientific forums.
Prof. Atta-ur-Rahman stands as Pakistan’s most decorated scientist, having received four national civil awards — Tamgha-i-Imtiaz, Sitara-i-Imtiaz, Hilal-i-Imtiaz, and Nishan-i-Imtiaz. Internationally, he has been recognized with numerous distinctions, including the Fellowship of the Royal Society (London), the UNESCO Science Prize, the TWAS Prize for Institution Building, and the Austrian Government’s High Civil Award.
In recognition of his outstanding scientific collaboration with China, he received the People’s Republic of China’s highest scientific honor, the International Science and Technology Cooperation Award, and was appointed Academician (Foreign Member) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Several research centers in China, Malaysia, and Pakistan have been named in his honor — including the Academician Professor Atta-ur-Rahman One Belt and One Road TCM Research Center in Hunan, China, and the Atta-ur-Rahman Institute on Natural Product Discovery (AuRINS) in Malaysia.
