PESHAWAR, Jun 20 (APP):The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Prisons Department and the University of Peshawar’s Department of Criminology formalized their partnership through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed at a ceremony held Friday.
Professor Dr. Johar Ali, Vice Chancellor of the University of Peshawar, and Muhammad Usman Mehsud, Inspector General of Prisons KP, inked the agreement in the presence of senior officials from both institutions. Notable attendees included DIG Prisons Haleema, DIG RPO Sahibzada Muhammad Qaiser, DIG (J&S) Amin Shoaib, and faculty members from the Criminology Department led by Chairman Prof. Dr. Basharat Hussain.
The collaboration establishes an institutional framework for developing certified courses and diploma programs for prison staff and conducting refresher training programs at the Prison Staff Training Academy.
Moreover, facilitating criminology students’ research access to prison facilities and revising existing training modules through academic input.
“This partnership bridges the gap between academia and prison administration,” stated IG Prisons Mehsud. “It will enable evidence-based reforms through research while professionalizing our workforce.”
VC Dr. Johar Ali emphasized the university’s commitment to applied learning, noting the agreement provides students unique fieldwork opportunities while contributing to criminal justice improvements.
The MoU represents a significant step in modernizing KP’s correctional system through academic partnerships, with implementation expected to begin in the next academic quarter.
