KARACHI, Jul 04 (APP):The Pakistan Medical Association (PMA) issued a strong condemnation of the continued targeting and killing of healthcare workers and their families in Gaza by Israeli forces, calling it a blatant violation of international law.
The PMA’s condemnation comes in the wake of disturbing reports, including the recent killing of Dr Marwan al-Sultan, Medical Director of the Indonesian Hospital in Gaza, and at least seven members of his family during an airstrike on the southwestern part of the territory. Dr al-Sultan’s home was reportedly targeted on Wednesday while he and his family were present.
A press release issued by the Secretary General PMA (Centre) on Thursday stated that, PMA is appalled and outraged by the systematic targeting of healthcare professionals and medical facilities in Gaza.
The statement further stated that, killing of Dr Marwan al-Sultan, a prominent voice against the crimes in northern Gaza and a crucial source of medical updates on the humanitarian crisis, is a grave escalation and a clear breach of international humanitarian law which protects medical personnel and facilities during conflict.
That attacks on healthcare workers, hospitals and ambulances are strictly prohibited under international law, including the Geneva Conventions. These acts not only lead to tragic loss of life but also severely cripple the already fragile healthcare system in Gaza, exacerbating the humanitarian catastrophe, statement added.
