PESHAWAR, Nov 27 (APP):The Peshawar High Court (PHC) on Thursday imposed a ban on boating at all tourist sites in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa where proper safety measures are not in place.
The decision came during a hearing on a petition filed by the Human Rights Commission regarding safety arrangements at tourist destinations.
The hearing was conducted by Justice Ejaz Anwar and Justice Muhammad Naeem Anwar.
During the proceedings, the court directed the Chief Secretary of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to submit a detailed report on safety protocols implemented at various tourist locations.
The petitioner’s lawyer informed the court that 53 people had drowned in Kohat Tanda Dam incident, which occurred due to the absence of safety measures.
He further argued that boating is common across many dams and tourist spots in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, yet most of these places lack basic safety arrangements.
As a result, several people lose their lives every year by drowning.
The lawyer requested the court to establish an inquiry commission to investigate the Tanda Dam tragedy and determine responsibility for the incident.
After hearing the arguments, the court adjourned the case until December 31 and reiterated its order banning boating without safety precautions. The court also instructed the Chief Secretary to present a comprehensive report at the next hearing.
