PESHAWAR, Jun 23 (APP):The Peshawar High Court (PHC) has issued a short order in a case seeking a ban on TikTok, allowing the Social Media Protection and Regulatory Authority (SMPRA) to be added as a respondent and directing it to submit its reply within two weeks.
According to the court order, the petitioner had filed an application requesting that SMPRA be made a party to the case, which the court approved.
The order stated that according to the petitioner’s counsel, the establishment of SMPRA has placed the monitoring and regulation of social media platforms, including TikTok, under the authority’s jurisdiction.
The court formally included SMPRA in the proceedings and instructed the relevant authority to submit its response within the stipulated period.
During the hearing, the petitioner’s lawyer argued that immoral and inappropriate content was being uploaded on TikTok, contributing to social and moral deterioration.
The petitioner requested the court either to impose a ban on TikTok or to direct the authorities concerned to ensure effective regulation and monitoring of the platform.
The inclusion of SMPRA in the case marks a significant development and the regulatory authority’s position is expected to be presented before the court during the next hearing.
