RAWALPINDI, October 20 (APP): The Punjab Food Authority (PFA) Rawalpindi on Monday morning seized over 1,000 kilograms of substandard meat during a major raid on an illegal slaughterhouse operating on Ali Al-Subh Jamia Masjid Road.
According to a PFA spokesperson, the action was carried out in coordination with local police after reports emerged of unlawful slaughtering practices. The seized meat was found to have been artificially soaked in water to increase its weight, posing serious health risks to consumers.
A key suspect involved in running the illegal slaughterhouse was arrested on the spot, while further investigation and legal proceedings have been initiated, the spokesperson added.
A veterinary doctor accompanying the inspection team examined the meat on-site and declared it highly unfit for human consumption. Officials confirmed that only approved and licensed slaughterhouses are authorized to process animals for public sale.
Authorities revealed that illegal slaughterhouses often target sick or weak animals, slaughtering them without health checks, a dangerous practice that compromises food safety and public health.
The PFA reaffirmed its commitment to continue province-wide operations against such illegal facilities to ensure that only safe and hygienic meat reaches consumers.
Citizens have been urged to report any suspicious slaughtering or sale of unhygienic meat by calling the PFA helpline at 1223.
