LAHORE, Jun 18 (APP): The Punjab Food Authority (PFA) enforcement team sealed a frozen and ready to cook meat production unit in Harbanspura and discarded 1,565 kilograms of expired meat during a raid conducted on the directions of PFA Director General Muhammad Asim Javed.
A food safety team found unhygienic conditions on the premises, where expired kababs, koftas and tikkas were stored in dirty freezers and placed directly on the floor. The spoiled products were being packed in attractive packaging for supply to well known marts and stores in Lahore.
Director general said that the unit was sealed on the spot for violating food safety regulations, while substandard meat items worth millions of rupees were seized and discarded. He added that the consumption of expired meat can cause severe gastrointestinal issues and poses a serious threat to public health. He warned that such food businesses will face strict legal action and PFA will continue its province wide crackdown against those involved in food adulteration.
The DG stated that the Punjab Food Authority is committed to bringing the entire food supply chain from production to distribution up to international standards. He has requested the public to report food safety violations by calling the PFA helpline at 1223.
