RAWALPINDI, Dec 05 (APP): The Punjab Food Authority (PFA) Rawalpindi Division on Friday destroyed crops grown with sewage water during a major operation at a vegetable farm in Fateh Jang.
According to a PFA spokesman, a team carried out a surprise inspection at the site and found that cauliflower and gourds cultivated on nine kanals were being irrigated with contaminated sewage water. The team immediately ploughed the standing crop and seized over 550 kilograms of cauliflower and around 750 kilograms of gourds, which were later destroyed.
The spokesman said sewage water contained germs, chemicals and heavy metals that seeped into vegetables, posing serious health hazards to consumers. He added that there was a complete ban across the province on using sewage water for cultivation and warned that strict action would continue against violators.
The spokesman reiterated that those jeopardising public health would not be spared and urged the citizens to report any such activity on the Authority’s helpline 1223 for prompt action by field teams.
