Pakistan-Iran trade potential can be unlocked through stronger cooperation: Iftikhar Malik

LAHORE, Jun 24 (APP):Former president of the SAARC Chamber of Commerce and Industry Iftikhar Ali Malik on Wednesday said that the visit of the Iranian President to Pakistan at the invitation of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif would further strengthen bilateral relations and provide fresh impetus to long-awaited economic cooperation between the two brotherly Muslim countries.
In a statement issued here, he said the visit would open a new chapter of collaboration and pave the way for enhanced trade, investment and regional connectivity. He observed that despite immense potential, bilateral trade between the two neighbouring countries remained far below its actual capacity.
Iftikhar Ali Malik said the visit offered a valuable opportunity for both countries to address existing challenges, remove trade barriers and facilitate greater interaction between their private sectors. He stressed the importance of strengthening cooperation in energy, agriculture, information technology, infrastructure development, tourism and border trade.
He said closer economic integration would not only benefit the people of Pakistan and Iran but would also contribute significantly to regional stability and prosperity. Enhanced business-to-business contacts and regular exchange of trade delegations, he added, could help unlock untapped economic potential and create new avenues for growth.
Urging chambers of commerce, trade bodies and investors from both sides to actively explore joint ventures and investment opportunities, he expressed the hope that the visit would yield concrete outcomes, including new agreements and initiatives aimed at boosting bilateral trade, economic cooperation and people-to-people contacts.
Iftikhar Ali Malik said Pakistan and Iran shared deep-rooted historical, cultural and religious bonds, which provided a strong foundation for expanding cooperation in diverse sectors of mutual interest.
