Over 45,000 cops performed duty on 6th Muharram

LAHORE, Jun 22 (APP):Punjab Police on Monday continued stringent security arrangements across the province, including Lahore, for Muharram, with more than 45,000 officers and personnel performing security duties on the sixth of Muharram to ensure the peaceful conduct of mourning processions and religious gatherings.
According to a Punjab Police spokesperson, a total of 925 mourning processions and 3,922 majalis were held across the province on 06 Muharram-ul-Haram. In Lahore alone, 56 mourning processions were taken out while 425 majalis were organised under comprehensive security measures.
The spokesperson said that over 23,000 community volunteers assisted police in maintaining security and facilitating mourners during the religious events.
Punjab Inspector General of Police (IGP) Abdul Kareem said that security would remain on high alert throughout the province during the first ten days of Muharram and strict implementation of Section 144 imposed by the Punjab government would be ensured.
He said aerial firing, display of weapons, dissemination of hate material and all provocative activities were strictly prohibited. Abdul Kareem added that no procession or majlis would be allowed outside approved routes and designated venues.
The IGP said security activities were being continuously monitored through cameras installed by the Punjab Safe Cities Authority and district administrations. He added that personnel of the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD), Special Branch, Traffic Police, Dolphin Squad, Police Response Unit (PRU) and other field formations had been deployed to strengthen Muharram security arrangements.
Abdul Kareem directed officers to ensure strict enforcement of the Loudspeaker Act and take indiscriminate action against individuals involved in spreading hateful content through social media platforms.
He further said that control rooms established in all districts had been linked with the Central Control Room at the Central Police Office (CPO) and would remain in constant coordination throughout Muharram to ensure effective monitoring and prompt response to any security-related situation.
