NGC starts construction of 220/132kV grid station for Gharo wind corridor

LAHORE, Nov 20 (APP):The National Grid Company of Pakistan (NGC) has commenced construction of 220/132kV Gas Insulated Substation (GIS) with the formal laying of the foundation stone to ensure the reliable transmission of electricity generated by wind power projects in the Gharo Wind Clusters.
Deputy Managing Director (AD&M) NGC, Engr. Rasheed A. Bhutto performed the groundbreaking along-with Managing Director Siemens Energy, Engr. Nadeem Ali Kazmi and Country Director KfW Mr. Sebastin Jacobi, during a ceremony held at the project site in Thatta, Sindh, according to NGC Headquarters’ spokesman here Thursday.
Supported by a 27 million Euro commitment from the German development bank KfW, the grid station is scheduled for completion within 24 months. Its key features include the installation of two 220/132kV, 250 MVA autotransformers, two 220kV line bays to connect a double circuit transmission line with the Jhimpir and Dhabeji grid stations, and four 132kV line bays dedicated to linking wind power plants within the Gharo cluster. Together, these components will strengthen Pakistan’s renewable energy infrastructure and enhance the delivery of clean, green electricity to the national grid.
Managing Director NGC, Engr. Altaf Hussain Malik, commended the efforts of the Project Delivery South team for initiating the construction work and directed them to maintain high standards and meet the project timelines.
Addressing the ceremony, Engr. Rasheed A. Bhutto emphasized the importance of the project and urged the contractors to complete the work according to stipulated timelines, noting that Gharo Grid Station will accelerate the development of Pakistan’s renewable energy sector and strengthen the national transmission network. He added that the project will enhance system reliability, improve voltage profiles across the NGC and HESCO networks and reduce transmission losses.
On the occasion, Managing Director Siemens Energy, Engr. Nadeem Ali Kazmi and Country Director KfW Mr. Sebastin Jacobi also expressed their views and reiterated their commitment to continue collaborating with NGC.
During the ceremony, traditional Sindhi Ajrak, Topi, and shields were presented to the distinguished guests, who also planted saplings at the conclusion of the event. The ceremony was attended by GM PD (South) Engr. Muhammad Akram Dharejo, GM PD (North) Engr. Muhammad Shahid Nazir, GM AM (South) Engr. Muhammad Rafique, GM (Media & PR) Muhammad Ibrahim, Chief Engineers, NGC officers, contractors, consultants and other stakeholders.
