MUST university students intensify strike, demand Immediate Action Amid Campus Chaos

MIRPUR, Dec 4 (APP): Students of the State-run Mirpur University of Science & Technology (MUST) launched an indefinite strike on Thursday, warning that the institution could plunge into deeper turmoil unless their grievances are addressed within 24 hours. Representing the MUST University United Forum, a coalition of student bodies, Mian Zeeshan told reporters at the Kashmir Press Club on Thursday that the administration has turned the campus into a “junkyard,” leaving students trapped in a web of problems ranging from inadequate transport to dilapidated hostels.
Zeeshan highlighted a litany of issues: overpriced hostel fees that exceed those of private accommodations, deplorable washroom conditions, and a lack of basic cleanliness. He accused the university’s Director of Student Affairs (DSA) of overstepping his authority, acting as a de-facto vice-chancellor, and called for his immediate dismissal. The students also pointed out that several academic departments remain unregistered with the Higher Education Commission (HEC), delaying the issuance of degrees.
Other student leaders echoed the concerns, noting that despite a year of negotiations, the administration has ignored repeated pleas. They claimed the DSA has become the primary obstacle, issuing notices and threats to those who speak out. Facilities on both the Mirpur and Jari campuses are reportedly insufficient: a football field sits in a ditch, transport buses are in poor condition, and there is no space for curricular or co-curricular activities.
The protesters presented a fourteen-point charter of demands, which includes the withdrawal of all notices against students, a revision of the fee structure, improved hostel amenities, the restoration of a student union, and the installation of additional benches across the campus. They warned that failure to meet these demands will force them to escalate the protest, potentially halting academic activities indefinitely.
University officials have yet to respond publicly to the ultimatum. The strike, now entering its 15th day in two departments, has already disrupted classes and examinations, prompting fears of a prolonged academic crisis if a resolution is not reached swiftly. The situation remains fluid as students prepare to intensify their action unless the administration acts decisively.
