LAHORE, Oct 23 (APP): Crackdown on smog-causing vehicles and transporters, challans issued for more than 8,000 vehicles, while more than 5,500 vehicles were impounded by the police stations concerned.
The Transport Department has issued a report on unusual actions against vehicles emitting smoke and without fitness certificates.
According to the report, so far this year, more than 90,000 vehicles have been inspected at Vehicle Inspection and Certification System stations in Lahore. Fitness certificates have been issued to 55,000 vehicles that met the standards. More than 8,000 vehicles emitting smoke have been challaned, while more than 5,500 vehicles have been compounded. Likewise, more than 3,500 vehicles running without fitness certificates have also been compounded in police stations.
More than 14,000 vehicles involved in overloading have been challaned. A total of Rs.85 million in fines have been imposed during the operations. Cases have been registered against 2200 vehicles for various violations, and 1800 drivers and vehicle owners have been arrested.
It may be noted that the transport minister Bilal Akbar Khan has directed 24-hour action against vehicles emitting smoke and said that no concessions will be made to vehicles emitting smoke and running without fitness certificates. To combat smog, it is important that owners get their vehicles repaired on time.
The minister transport further said that violators in all districts of Punjab will face strict action, and every necessary step will be taken to eradicate the menace of smog.
