LAHORE, Oct 27 (APP):Punjab Agriculture Minister Syed Ashiq Hussain Kirmani, along with Punjab Agriculture Secretary Iftikhar Ali Sahoo, visited divisional headquarters as part of their wheat sowing campaign. During a review meeting held in Rawalpindi, the Minister shared key updates regarding the government’s efforts to boost wheat production and ensure food security.
Syed Ashiq Hussain Kirmani announced that the Wheat Policy 2025-26 had been approved by both the federal and provincial governments. Under this policy, the wheat purchase price has been fixed at Rs. 3,500 per 40 kg, and a procurement target of 6.2 million metric tons for strategic reserves has been set.
He emphasized that wheat has now become a profitable crop for farmers, with stable prices in line with both local and international requirements. The wheat cultivation target for Punjab this season has been set at 16.5 million acres, with the Rawalpindi Division specifically targeting 1.53 million acres.
The minister also highlighted that certified wheat seeds are available at Rs 5,500 per bag, while fertilizers are being provided at prices lower than the fixed rates. He stressed the importance of using certified seeds instead of household-consumed wheat grain for better crop yield and quality.
Iftikhar Ali Sahoo, Punjab Agriculture Secretary, provided further details on the government’s agricultural initiatives. He mentioned the ongoing Agriculture Transformation Plan in the Potohar region, which is being implemented at a cost of Rs 7 billion. This plan is aimed at strengthening agricultural development and improving the rural economy.
Member of National Assembly Tahira Aurangzeb also spoke at the meeting, emphasizing the significance of wheat for national food security, noting that Punjab contributes more than 70% to Pakistan’s total wheat production.
Commissioner Rawalpindi Division Muhammad Aamir Khattak praised the efforts of divisional and district administrations, stating that they were playing an active role in supporting the wheat sowing campaign and ensuring its success.
With favorable weather conditions for rain-fed areas, the government’s focus on wheat sowing and support for farmers is expected to bolster wheat production in the province and contribute to national food security.
