LAHORE, Feb 03 (APP): Punjab Minister for Local Government and Community Development (LG&CD) Zeeshan Rafique, chairing a meeting at the Civil Secretariat here on Tuesday, reviewed the prospects of local manufacturing of modern cleaning machinery currently used in Turkey.
LG&CD Secretary Shakeel Ahmed Mian, Special Secretary Arshad Baig, Director General Suthra Punjab Authority Babar Sahib Din and Additional Secretary Ahmer Sohail Kaifi attended the meeting.
Speaking on the occasion, Minister Zeeshan Rafique said that the establishment of the Suthra Punjab Authority was a major step towards entering the waste-to-value phase. He said that up to 15 megawatts of electricity could be generated through power generators installed at Lahore’s Lakhoder landfill site, adding that electricity production could be increased gradually.
The minister directed the authorities concerned to complete feasibility studies and prepare proposals by March, stating that a memorandum of understanding would be signed with Pak Suzuki Company for the production of biofuel from offal. He said that Suthra Punjab was a successful model of public-private partnership and added that organic fertiliser would also be produced through proper segregation of waste.
Zeeshan Rafique added that small vacuum sweepers and tractor-towed sweepers would be manufactured locally, which would not only strengthen the cleaning mechanism but also contribute to economic growth.
Meanwhile, LG&CD Secretary Shakeel Ahmed Mian directed the officials to expedite the transition process of the Suthra Punjab Authority, saying that private sector cooperation would be sought in the waste-to-value phase. He added that efforts to obtain carbon credits were progressing rapidly and tangible progress would be seen soon.
