MULTAN, Jul 30 (APP): Joint teams of Multan Electric Power Company (Mepco) and Rangers continued recovery operations across the biggest region boasting country’s largest consumer base, despite facing stiff resistance from defaulters and power pilferers.
Under orders from Mepco Engineer Gul Muhammad Zahid, a team led by Superintending Engineer DG Khan Circle Malik Khurshid Ahmed and Rangers Commander, conducted operations in Vahowa Subdivision.
During a recovery raid led by Executive Engineer Allah Wario in Tibbi Wali village, resistance erupted when women pelted stones from rooftops, shattering the windshield of a Rangers vehicle, says an official release. The homeowner, a defaulter owing Rs. 4.3 million to Mepco, was arrested and transferred to Vahowa police station. An FIR has been lodged.
In other areas, nine defaulters were arrested on-site for non-payment of electricity dues worth millions. Over Rs. 1.8 million in outstanding dues were recovered during the operation.
Meanwhile, in Dajal Subdivision, 24 individuals were caught stealing electricity by hooking illegal connections to LT lines. Mepco staff faced obstruction and damage during enforcement. Accused did not let the Mepco team to remove several ‘Kunda’. Cases have been registered at Hanif Ghori Shaheed police station.
A similar operation was conducted in Bahawalpur Circle, where joint teams of Mepco, Rangers, and police disconnected four defaulting connections and removed meters and wires. One individual was caught red-handed stealing electricity.
Mepco officials reiterated that such operations will continue without discrimination to curb electricity theft and ensure recovery from chronic defaulters.
