MULTAN, Nov 15 (APP): A meeting focused on post-flood strategy and future flood preparedness for 2025 was held at the Commissioner’s office under the chairmanship of Commissioner Multan Division, Amir Kareem Khan. The meeting was attended by Deputy Commissioner Multan Waseem Hamid Sindhu, Additional Deputy Commissioner Revenue Muhammad Abubakar, and officials from the Irrigation, Highways, and other relevant departments. Deputy Commissioners from across the division participated via video link.
The meeting primarily discussed preparedness measures for any potential future flood situations. Commissioner Amir Kareem Khan directed the concerned departments to develop a comprehensive plan to strengthen the region’s infrastructure in anticipation of future flooding. He also requested a detailed briefing on the status of weak, illegal, or unsafe flood protection bunds, instructing the departments to finalize recommendations regarding their continuation or removal.
The Irrigation and Revenue departments were tasked with taking immediate action against unauthorized bunds. Emphasis was placed on constructing durable, long-term infrastructure to reduce future flood damage. Additionally, the Commissioner directed the installation of modern scientific gauges at headworks to improve flood monitoring and response time.
A detailed briefing was provided on the Jalalpur Pirwala flood protection bund, with the Commissioner urging that the feasibility study be completed immediately, followed by groundwork to ensure its completion before the next high-flow season. The meeting was also informed that the Nooraja Bhatta flood bund had already been completed and was undergoing further strengthening.
Regarding road restoration, it was reported that out of 55 flood-affected roads, 39 had already been restored, with the remaining roads set to be rehabilitated within the next ten days.
The Commissioner instructed the Irrigation department to survey all privately constructed “Zamindara bunds” to ensure compliance with the law. He further directed that separate meetings be held between the Irrigation officers and Deputy Commissioners next week to finalize a detailed strategy for the upcoming flood season.
Concluding the meeting, Commissioner Amir Kareem Khan emphasized the urgent need for a comprehensive action plan to strengthen and upgrade the headworks on all three rivers to ensure the maximum protection of public life and infrastructure in the future flood seasons.
