Local Knowledge, Digital Technology and Evidence-Based Systems Essential for Climate Resilience in Coastal Areas: Experts

KARACHI, Aug 19 (APP):Environmental and disaster management experts have called for greater use of local knowledge, digital technology and evidence-based systems to strengthen climate resilience in Sindh’s coastal areas.
Speaking at a panel discussion titled “Disaster Mapping in Coastal Areas: Foundation for Strong Resilience and Sustainable Development” at the University of Karachi, experts highlighted the risks posed by climate change, cyclones, floods, coastal erosion and seawater intrusion.
They emphasized the need for risk mapping and documentation before disasters occur, as well as greater community participation in preparedness, planning and decision-making.
Speakers said coastal communities have valuable knowledge about local environmental risks and should be actively involved in disaster management. They also highlighted the role of tools such as GPS, GIS, satellite imagery, digital dashboards and community-based mapping in improving early warnings and decision-making.
The experts also stressed the importance of protecting natural resources, livelihoods and cultural heritage in coastal development plans. Mangrove restoration and other nature-based solutions were identified as important measures for improving resilience.
The panel brought together representatives from the University of Karachi, the Sindh Ombudsman’s Office, environmental organizations and other relevant fields. Participants called for regular updates to disaster maps and their integration into district and provincial disaster management systems across Sindh’s coastal belt.
