SARGODHA, Oct 02 (APP):The livestock sector has once again reaffirmed its status as the backbone of Pakistan’s agriculture and overall economy, contributing a significant 63.60% to the agriculture sector and 14.97% to the national GDP, according to the Economic Survey 2024-25.
While major crop production has faced stagnation due to climatic and economic challenges, the livestock sector  demonstrated resilience and steady growth, recording an impressive 4.72% growth rate during the year. Experts regard it as a critical pillar supporting rural livelihoods, food security, and the nation’s economic stability.
“Livestock is a lifeline for millions in rural Pakistan,” said Dr. Tanveer Ashraf Kalyar, Additional Deputy Director, Livestock Department. “Its consistent performance, even in uncertain times, shows its potential to drive agricultural transformation in the country.”
He emphasized that cattle, buffaloes, goats, and sheep were not only essential sources of milk, meat, and hides, but also provide sustainable income for smallholder farmers, particularly women, who play a central role in managing livestock at the household level.
The sector’s consistent growth has helped stabilize the agricultural GDP and served as a buffer against food inflation by ensuring a reliable supply of dairy and meat products across the country.
Dr. Kalyar further stressed the importance of modernizing livestock practices and enhancing market linkages for farmers. “Targeted investments in technology, veterinary services, and training can unlock the full potential of the sector,” he noted.
The economic survey also highlighted livestock’s integral role in value-added industries such as dairy processing, leather, and meat exports, positioning it as a key driver of rural development and industrial growth.
With the global demand for halal meat and dairy products on the rise, experts believe Pakistan has an excellent opportunity to expand its export footprint, provided the sector receives adequate investment and value chain development support.
As Pakistan navigates mounting agricultural challenges, the livestock sector continues to anchor the country’s food system and economic resilience, quietly but powerfully, reinforcing its indispensable role in national progress.
