MULTAN, Nov 02 (APP): The Livestock and Dairy Development Department Punjab initiated a major genetic improvement program to enhance the productivity of local (desi) non-descriptive (indigenous) cows, a step hailed as one of the most promising initiatives in the
livestock sector.
Deputy Director Livestock Dr. Jamshaid Akhtar said the Punjab government had allocated Rs 1 billion for the project, which aims to provide over one million doses of high-quality cattle semen at highly subsidized rates. “Brahman semen doses are being offered at Rs 500 and Friesian semen doses at just Rs 150,” he said, adding that the program would significantly improve the milk and meat yield of local cow breeds across Punjab.
He explained, most cows found in rural Punjab were non-descriptive indigenous breeds with low milk production potential. “The purpose of this project is to improve the genetic composition of these local cows, enabling them to produce more milk and gain weight faster. This will directly uplift the economic condition of livestock farmers,” he remarked.
Dr Jamshaid said that under the program, eligible animals must meet specific criteria to qualify for insemination. “The cow should be producing at least 3 to 5 liters of milk daily, be reproductively active, free from physical and reproductive diseases, and should have calved at least once,” he elaborated.
He said the use of high-quality semen would not only enhance productivity but also help farmers breed stronger and more efficient animals for future generations.
“By adopting this scientific approach, we aim to transform our traditional livestock sector into a modern, profitable, and sustainable enterprise,” he said.
He added that the project also included a strong research component, as genetic improvement work was being conducted in research institutions across the province.
“These efforts will contribute to producing superior bulls, enhancing field performance, and building the technical capacity of both farmers and veterinary staff,” he added.
The deputy director urged livestock owners to visit their nearest veterinary hospitals or certified insemination technicians to avail of the subsidized semen doses. “The Livestock Department Punjab stands shoulder to shoulder with farmers to ensure that every rural household benefits from improved animal productivity,” he affirmed.
Dr Jamshaid emphasized the program would not only help meet the growing demand for milk and meat but also play a vital role in strengthening the rural economy.
“Better genetics mean better milk, better income, and a better future for our farmers”, he added.
