LAHORE, Oct 09 (APP):The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Thursday dismissed an appeal filed by convict Muhammad Tariq, upholding the life imprisonment sentence handed down by the trial court in a drug trafficking case.
A two-member bench comprising Justice Farooq Haider and Justice Ali Zia Bajwa announced the verdict after hearing detailed arguments from both sides. The court observed that the punishment awarded by the trial court was justified based on the evidence, witness testimonies, and forensic report presented during the proceedings.
During the hearing, Additional Prosecutor General Abdul Samad opposed the appeal, arguing that 18 kilograms of charas was recovered from Muhammad Tariq — a fact confirmed by the Punjab Forensic Science Agency’s report. He maintained that the prosecution witnesses’ statements were consistent and that the investigation team had presented solid evidence in the 2019 case registered at Shahpur City Police Station, Sargodha.
Abdul Samad further stated that the trial court had delivered a merit-based judgment, taking into account all relevant material, including forensic and testimonial evidence.
Conversely, the defense counsel contended that the complainant in the case had also served as the investigating officer, which, he argued, was against the principles of a fair investigation.
Rejecting the defence’s contentions, the court dismissed the appeal and upheld the trial court’s verdict.
