LAHORE, Jul 30 (APP):The Lahore High Court (LHC) On Wednesday suspended the election schedule for the NA-175 by-election, scheduled for September 10, and halted the electoral process following a petition by former member of the National Assembly Jamshed Dasti.
A three-member full bench, headed by Chief Justice Aalia Neelum, and comprising Justice Khalid Ishaq and Justice Hassan Nawaz Makhdoom, issued the order while hearing Dasti’s plea challenging his disqualification by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).
The court also barred the ECP from taking any further action against Dasti and issued notices to the Election Commission and the attorney general for Pakistan for assistance in the matter.
Jamshed Dasti appeared before the bench along with his legal team. His counsel, Advocate Ishtiaq A. Khan, argued that the disqualification was based on allegations of fake academic degrees, which he termed baseless.
Earlier, Dasti had approached the LHC Multan Bench, but the matter was referred to the Chief Justice with a recommendation to form a full bench for its hearing.
