LAHORE, Oct 30 (APP): Lahore Police have arrested 203 suspects and registered 197 first information reports (FIRs) during its intensified crackdown on pollution-causing elements under the ongoing anti-smog campaign.
According to a police spokesperson, 175 individuals were apprehended for emitting smoke from factories, shops, brick kilns, and other sources, while 14 people were detained for burning tires, plastic, and shopping bags, and 10 others for burning crop residues.
The spokesperson added that in October alone, Traffic Police arrested 137 people involved in smog-causing activities. Over 13,700 smoke-emitting vehicles were fined, more than 21,000 vehicles penalised for lacking fitness certificates, and 5,600 vehicles fined for operating without tarpaulin covers. Additionally, over 3,000 vehicles were impounded during the month as part of the anti-smog drive.
Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) Lahore Bilal Siddique Kamyana said that strict action is being taken against vehicles, factories, and brick kiln owners responsible for causing smog, as well as individuals involved in burning agricultural waste. He added that Lahore Police are fully cooperating with relevant departments in anti-smog operations.
The CCPO further stated that Punjab Safe Cities Authority (PSCA) cameras are being utilised to identify and take action against vehicles causing pollution. He said special check posts have been established at the city’s entry and exit points to monitor and intercept polluting vehicles.
Bilal Siddique directed the Traffic Police to continue strict enforcement against smoke-emitting vehicles and emphasised that preventive measures, environmental protection, and public awareness are vital to effectively curb air pollution.
