KARACHI, Oct 21 (APP):University of Karachi- KU’s Department of Biochemistry on Tuesday orgainsed a seminar and e-poster competition titled “Let’s Be Healthy: From Awareness to Action,” at the KU’s Audiovisual Center here.
Vice Chancellor of the University of Karachi, Professor Dr Khalid Mahmood Iraqi, while addressing the seminar, emphasized that a significant portion of our society continues to ignore scientific facts and undervalues the timely diagnosis of diseases.
This negligence is contributing to the rise of life-threatening illnesses. He noted the alarming trend of diagnosing diseases only when they have reached an incurable stage. He urged that serious efforts are needed to promote awareness so that people can understand the fundamentals of health and the importance of science.
Consultant Nutritionist at Indus Hospital, Dr Anees Alam, spoke on the topic “Managing Mental Stress: A Welfare Lifestyle Perspective.” He advised students to prioritize self-care to alleviate mental stress. He highlighted that a balanced and nutritious diet is essential not only for physical but also for mental well-being.
He stated that exercise and yoga are highly effective in reducing stress and anxiety, with yogic practices offering peace to both body and mind. He emphasized that positive thinking, adequate sleep, and daily physical activity are foundational elements for mental health.
Another speaker, Assistant Professor at the Department of Biochemistry from Dow University of Health Sciences Dr Arisha Suleman, addressed the topic “Chronic Disease Treatment: Reality or Myth?” and debunked the misconception that chronic illnesses are incurable.
Earlier, KU’s Chairperson of the Department of Biochemistry, Professor Dr Shamim Akhtar Qureshi, emphasized that maintaining an active and dynamic health routine is a fundamental responsibility of every individual.
In the morning session, final-year students Zamaysha, Aamir, Hareem Arshad, and Jyoti Bai Sharmin Mahmood were awarded cash prizes for presenting outstanding e-posters on the topic of Thalassemia.
In the evening session, final-year students Javeria Abdul Rasheed, Amara Murtaza, Syeda Maniza, and Nimra Ikram received cash prizes for their excellent e-posters and performances on critical topics such as “Lung Carcinoma” and “Bronchogenic Carcinoma.”
