KARACHI, Nov 27 (APP): Vice Chancellor of the University of Karachi Professor Dr. Khalid Mahmood Iraqi inaugurated the newly constructed centralized classrooms building for the departments fall under the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences on Thursday.
On this occasion, the KU’s Director of Planning and Development Saeed Ahmed Sheikh shared that the building spans 20,000 square feet and has been completed at a cost of PKR175 million. The project was funded by the Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan and the Planning Commission of Pakistan.
According to him, the ground floor houses six modern classrooms, each with a seating capacity of 40 to 60 students. Additionally, a semester hall has been established that can accommodate more than 140 students at a time. The first floor includes three classrooms and three computer laboratories, each designed to seat and facilitate 40 students simultaneously.
Addressing the ceremony, the KU VC Professor Dr Khalid Mahmood Iraqi remarked that while the number of students and academic departments at the university continues to grow, adequate attention has not been given to improving infrastructure.
He emphasized that whenever new academic programs are introduced, it is essential to provide the corresponding buildings and equipment. He stated that if the large buildings and infrastructure currently available at the University of Karachi were in the possession of a private institution, their enrollment would have doubled. Unfortunately, he noted, the university does not utilize its infrastructure to its full potential, which is a major concern.
The KU VC Professor Dr Khalid Iraqi added that despite limited resources, the University of Karachi is striving to improve its academic and administrative affairs. “We must adopt the mindset that our needs have to be met within these limited resources.”
