PESHAWAR, Nov 27 (APP): A second meeting of the committee formed to review the proposed abolition of the Action in Aid of Civil Power Regulations, 2011 (AACP), was held on Thursday under the chairmanship of the Provincial Minister for Law, Aftab Alam Advocate, in line with the unanimously passed Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly Resolution No. 212.
The meeting was attended by Minister for Housing Dr. Amjad Ali, Advocate General Shah Faisal, IG Prisons Usman Mehsud, the Secretary Law and senior officers from relevant departments, said a press release.
An implementation report on decisions taken in the previous meeting was presented, while the committee discussed various proposals aimed at addressing any potential legal vacuum that may arise following the repeal of the AACP Regulations.
The Law Minister directed participants to ensure that all recommendations adequately balance court directives, national security needs, and the protection of citizens’ rights.
The forum reaffirmed the government’s commitment to preventing political or personal victimization and ensuring full protection of fundamental rights.
In a separate meeting, detailed deliberations were held on proposed amendments to the Anti-Terrorism Act 1997, the West Pakistan Public Order Ordinance 1960, and Section 144 of the CrPC 1898.
The objective was to further improve the effectiveness of these laws while ensuring their safeguards against misuse for political pressure or victimization.
Law Minister Aftab Alam Advocate stated that the provincial government is undertaking a comprehensive review of public order and security laws with the aim of ensuring public welfare.
He emphasized that while these laws are essential for maintaining peace and order, they must not be allowed to infringe upon civil liberties.
He added that greater transparency and fairness will be ensured so that the chances of political exploitation are eliminated and justice prevails.
