DERA ISMAIL KHAN, Sep 07 (APP):Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Faisal Karim Kundi Sunday emphasized the urgent need for the construction of small dams in the province to mitigate the recurring devastation caused by heavy rains and floods.
While talking to media, he said that natural disasters should not be politicized, but tackled collectively through effective rehabilitation measures.
The governor noted that while Swat, Buner, and Bajaur had suffered severe destruction, Dera Ismail Khan faced relatively less damage.
“More than 400 people have lost their lives in Buner alone, and many are still missing. Unlike in the past, when flooding was confined to certain regions, this year almost every part of the province has been affected,” Kundi said, adding that livelihoods, homes, and businesses had been swept away.
He praised the efforts of NDMA and PDMA, and urged the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government, NGOs, and other institutions to accelerate rehabilitation efforts, assuring that the federal government was fully cooperating.
Responding to a question about construction of Kalabagh dam, the governor stressed that instead of debating the controversial Kalabagh Dam, focus should be placed on smaller dams within the province.
He suggested that reservoirs at Daraban Zam, Sheikh Haider Zam, Tank Zam, and Chodwan Zam in Dera Ismail Khan division would provide effective protection and sustainable water management.
